Departure for Borduria
In his sixth solo exhibition, Borduria, André Willimann presents new works created in Zurich over the past three years. The exhibition brings together copies and free interpretations of art-historical images from different eras – deliberately fragmentary, situated between chance, memory and selection. Willimann distances himself from questions of original and copy, format and medium, creating independent visual worlds in acrylic on wood.
Borduria, a fictional state from Tintin, exemplifies the adventurous parallel worlds that have accompanied Willimann since childhood. Historical painting, portraiture, landscape, cartoon and still life meet here on equal terms. The works open up new realms of reality and invite viewers to question established hierarchies of art, history and meaning. Willimann’s painting presents itself as a sensual, anarchic fiction – an invitation to rethink and expand reality.
