What is the penguin doing in my garden? 

Spotting a penguin in your garden is an unusual sight in Europe—but what if it soon became commonplace? Climate change could eventually force penguins to leave Antarctica, turning gardens into stopovers as they search for new habitats. Stefan Daniel’s installation What is the penguin doing in my garden? (2024) envisions this unsettling scenario, highlighting the impact of ecological changes and the role humans play in them. His work provokes strong emotions and invites viewers to reflect on the Anthropocene. In Hidden Landscapes (2015-2017), Daniel focuses on the fight against the melting Rhone glacier, while Brave New World (2021-2023) challenges our perception of reality by blurring the lines between illusion and truth. A recurring theme in Daniel’s work is the use of gold as a symbol of exploitation, especially in Golden Cage (2022-2023) and What if the data do not lie? (2024). Through his art, Daniel urges us to reconsider how we interact with nature to ensure a sustainable future for generations to come.
